Schema Markup Will Not Get You Into AI Overviews

Google says it plainly: there is no special structured data that makes you eligible for its AI features. Schema still earns its place, just not for the reason most agencies sell it.

The claim, and the source that kills it

There is a service being sold right now called AI schema, or LLM optimisation markup, or answer engine structured data. It usually costs four figures.

Google's own documentation on its AI features says the opposite in one sentence: there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary. The same page states that you do not need to create machine readable files, AI text files, or markup, and that there is no special schema.org structured data to add.

Google published a further guide in May 2026 telling site owners the same thing about llms.txt: it is not used.

That is a primary source contradicting a paid deliverable. Ask any supplier proposing AI schema to reconcile the two before you sign anything.

So why implement schema at all

Because it does a different job, and that job is still worth doing.

Rich results. Review stars, FAQ accordions, event dates, product prices, breadcrumb trails, recipe cards. These are rendered from structured data, they change how much space you occupy, and they change click-through rate. This is the actual return.

Machine-readable facts about your business. Your name, address, phone number, opening hours, and the entities you are connected to. Search systems build an understanding of who you are from consistent, explicit statements. Ambiguity costs you, particularly if another organisation shares your name.

Removing interpretation. Structured data does not make a page more authoritative. It removes the guesswork about what the page contains. That is a small, real, permanent gain, and it costs a one-off afternoon.

What it does not do is make thin content rank, or buy you a citation in a generated answer. Citation follows from being the clearest, most credible source on the question, which is a content problem, not a markup problem.

The four types most small sites need

  1. Organization on the home page. Legal name, logo, URL, contact details, and sameAs links to your verified profiles. This is the record everything else hangs off.
  2. LocalBusiness if you serve a place. Address and hours must match your Google Business Profile character for character. A mismatch between your site and your profile is a self-inflicted ranking problem, as covered in the local SEO guide.
  3. Article or BlogPosting on every post. Headline, author, publish date, modified date, image. The modified date matters more than people think when you are refreshing older work.
  4. FAQPage where you genuinely answer questions. Each one needs a unique identifier if you have several on a site. Do not mark up questions nobody asked to farm space; that is the abuse Google has repeatedly clamped down on.

Product, Service, Review, and BreadcrumbList follow if they apply to you. Everything beyond that is usually someone billing by the schema type.

How to know it is right

Validate every template with Google's Rich Results Test and the Schema.org validator, then watch the Enhancements reports in Search Console for a fortnight. Structured data errors are silent: nothing breaks visually, the rich result simply never appears.

The most common failures we find are boringly mechanical. Markup describing a page that no longer exists. Review markup on a page with no visible reviews, which is a policy violation. Two conflicting Organization blocks from a theme and a plugin both claiming to be the site. Dates in the wrong format.

Frequently asked

Will schema improve our rankings? Not directly. It improves eligibility for result formats that get clicked more, which is a different and more measurable thing.

Should we add llms.txt anyway, just in case? It costs almost nothing and Google says it is unused. If you add it, do not let anyone bill you for it as an AI strategy.

Can Fixora audit our markup? Yes: every template validated, conflicts removed, and the four types above implemented properly. Send us the domain and get the findings within 48 hours.
