A logo is not a brand identity

The fastest way to waste a founder's first design budget is to commission only a logo. A logo without a system around it is a mark in a vacuum. The first time you need a social post, a slide deck, a job ad, or a pitch deck, the gap shows.

A real brand identity in 2026 includes, at minimum:

  • A primary mark, a secondary mark, and a favicon variant.
  • A typeface system (one display, one body, weights documented).
  • A color palette with at least one primary, two neutrals, two accents, and a contrast pass for accessibility.
  • A grid system or layout language.
  • A photography or illustration direction.
  • Voice and tone guidelines, in plain English with do and don't examples.
  • A short brand book PDF that ties it all together.

If your quote does not include all of the above, you are quoting a logo, not an identity.

What it costs, honestly

Identity work falls into rough tiers:

  • Solo or junior designer: $1,500 to $5,000. Good for very early stage. Expect the system to be light and ongoing support to be limited.
  • Mid sized studio: $8,000 to $25,000. The sweet spot for funded startups and scaling SMBs. Full system, real strategy, two rounds of revision.
  • Senior studio or agency: $40,000 and up. You are paying for senior creative direction, brand strategy, and often naming or messaging work.

Cheaper than $1,500 is usually a logo template with edits, not a custom identity. Be honest with yourself about which tier you actually need.

How long it takes

Six weeks is normal for a mid tier engagement. Two of those weeks are research and strategy, two are concept and direction, and two are refinement and delivery. Rushing identity work is the single most common regret we hear from founders.

If a designer promises a full system in five days, ask hard questions about how much of it is custom and how much is from a template.

The five questions to answer before the first call

A good designer will ask these. If yours does not, push them to.

  1. Who is this brand for, in one sentence? Not your TAM, not your buyer personas. The actual person you are designing for.
  2. What is the thing this brand will be known for? One trait. Pick the most honest one, not the most flattering.
  3. What are three brands you admire and one you actively want to avoid? Be specific. "Apple" is too easy. "Notion" is more useful.
  4. Where will the brand live first? Web, app, retail, video, deck. The first home shapes the whole system.
  5. What is the budget, and what is the budget after this? Identity is not a one time spend. Budget for at least one design refresh in year two.

Red flags

  • Designers who show only logos in their portfolio, never the full systems.
  • Quotes that do not break down deliverables by phase.
  • Promises of "unlimited revisions."
  • No discovery call before quoting.
  • A portfolio that all looks the same regardless of client.

What you should expect to receive

At handoff, your delivery should include:

  • Vector source files (AI, SVG).
  • A working brand guideline PDF, 20 to 40 pages.
  • Logo variants in all common formats, on light and dark.
  • Font files or licensing notes.
  • A starter pack of templates (deck, social, email signature, document).

Anything less and you will be paying again next quarter for the same files.
