Google Is About to Phone Your Business. Will Anyone Pick Up?

Google announced Search agents that ring businesses on a user's behalf, starting with home repair, beauty and pet care in the US. Your next enquiry may not be a person, and it will not call twice.

What Google actually announced

At I/O 2026, Google introduced Search agents: agents a user can create and manage inside Search to carry out tasks for them.

Three things in that announcement matter to anyone running a local business.

Google will call businesses on the user's behalf. For select categories, home repair and beauty and pet care, a user can ask Google to phone around for them. Rolling out to US users from summer 2026.

Agentic booking extended to local experiences and services, with specific criteria matching. Google's own example is a request like a private karaoke room for six on a Friday night that serves food late.

AI Mode passed one billion monthly users within a year, with queries reportedly more than doubling every quarter. This is not a pilot on a fringe surface.

Why this is a different kind of change

Every previous shift in local search changed how a customer found you. This one changes who contacts you.

For twenty years the first touch was a human: someone who could be persuaded, who might forgive a slow answer because your reviews looked good, who would call back if the line was busy.

An agent does none of that. It is executing an instruction on behalf of someone who is not on the call. It asks a narrow question, can you do this job on this date at roughly this price, records the answer, and moves to the next number on the list.

There is no persuasion step. Your charm, your brand, the nice photography: none of it is in the room. The agent is collecting facts to report back to a human who will choose afterwards.

The brutal part

We do not yet know the mechanics in detail, and anyone telling you they do is guessing. Google has not published how many businesses an agent rings, how long it waits, or what happens on voicemail.

But the direction is not ambiguous. An automated caller working through a list has no reason to be patient. If your phone rings out at 2pm on a Tuesday, the agent does not sit on hold, does not try again this afternoon, and does not remember that you are usually excellent.

Missed calls have always been expensive. Response speed already decides the outcome in every lead generation study we have looked at. What changes is that the penalty becomes silent and total: you will not see a missed call from a customer, because the customer never dialled.

What the agent needs from you

Work backwards from what it has to report to its user, and the list is short and unglamorous.

Are you the right category? The primary category on your Google Business Profile is what puts you on the list at all. It remains one of the highest weighted individual factors in local ranking and it is a dropdown most owners set once. The full checklist is here.

Do you cover this address? Service area set to where you genuinely go. Inflating it does not extend your reach, it makes you the supplier who says no on the call.

Are you open? Real hours, real holiday hours, real emergency availability. Being listed as open when you are not is now a wasted agent call rather than just an annoyed human.

Do you do this specific job? The Services list on your profile is free indexable text stating exactly what you sell, and most profiles leave it empty. An agent matching a specific request against an empty services list has nothing to match.

What does it cost, roughly? A range is enough. "It depends" is a defensible answer to a human who can be talked round. To an agent collecting comparable answers, it is a blank field.

Can someone answer? A human, an answering service, or at minimum a system that texts back within minutes.

Who this hits first, and who is next

Google named home repair, beauty and pet care. If you are a plumber, an electrician, a salon or a groomer in the US, this is your quarter to get ready, and the groundwork is in home services marketing.

Everyone else should read the category list as a starting point rather than a boundary. The pattern Google is following is obvious: high frequency local services with a simple availability question. Dentists, garages, cleaners, driving instructors, physios and chauffeur firms all fit that shape. If your business is one where the entire enquiry is "can you do X on Y date, and roughly what does it cost", assume you are in a later wave.

The uncomfortable strategic point

This compresses the value of everything downstream of the phone call and raises the value of everything upstream of it.

A beautiful website does not help if an agent never visits it. Clever ad copy does not help if the agent is working from a profile. What helps is being findable, correctly categorised, accurately described, and reachable, which is the least glamorous quarter of marketing and the part most businesses have been putting off for years.

It is the same lesson as agentic commerce arriving in the service economy. There, the buyer stopped visiting your storefront and started comparing your product data. Here, the buyer stops calling and starts sending something that only reads facts.

Brand still matters. It just moves upstream, into the moment the human decides which three names to have their agent call, and into the moment they pick one from the three answers. That is what reviews and recognition are for, and it is why the trust research does not stop mattering.

What to do in the next thirty days

  1. Fix the primary category. One dropdown, largest single effect.
  2. Fill in the Services list properly. Every job you actually take, named the way a customer would say it.
  3. Correct your hours, including exceptions. Then set the service area honestly.
  4. Publish a price indication. A range, a call out fee, a starting point. Something an agent can record.
  5. Fix missed call handling before anything else. A human in hours, and an automatic text back for anything missed. This is the highest return item on the list and it costs almost nothing.
  6. Test it yourself. Ring your own business at 2pm on a weekday from a number nobody recognises. What happens is what happens to the agent.

Frequently asked

Is this live now? Google said summer 2026 for US users, in home repair, beauty and pet care. Check whether it has reached your market rather than assuming.

Can I refuse agent calls? Nothing published suggests an opt out, and refusing inbound business is a strange strategy. The better move is to be the one that answers.

Does this kill SEO for local businesses? The opposite. It makes the profile data that feeds these systems more valuable and the website marginally less so, which is a reallocation rather than a loss. See the local SEO guide.

What if my prices genuinely vary? Publish the logic instead of the number: a call out fee, an hourly rate, a typical range for the three commonest jobs.
