Home Services Marketing: The Fastest Answer Wins the Job
A blocked drain is not a considered purchase. The customer calls three numbers from the map pack and hires whoever picks up. Almost everything else in home services marketing is downstream of that.

The buying process is about ninety seconds long
Somebody's boiler fails on a Tuesday morning. They search, they look at the three businesses in the map pack, they glance at the star ratings, and they call. If the first does not answer, they call the second.
That is the entire funnel. There is no consideration phase, no nurture sequence, and no brand preference. Emergency home services is one of the few categories where the buyer genuinely does not care who you are, only whether you can come today.
This has two consequences that most trade businesses get backwards. Ranking in the map pack is worth more than everything else combined. And answering the phone is worth more than ranking.
The local pack is the whole battlefield
Whitespark's 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors survey of local SEO practitioners puts Google Business Profile signals at roughly a third of local pack weight, with review signals around a fifth and on page SEO close behind. Proximity to the searcher remains the largest single input, and it is the one you cannot control.
What you can control, ranked by leverage:
Your primary category. It is consistently one of the top factors in the survey, and it is a dropdown you set once and forget. "Plumber" and "Drainage service" are different markets. Pick the one that matches the job you most want, then use secondary categories for the rest.
Review volume and velocity. Not just the total. A steady flow of recent reviews is a stronger signal than a hundred from four years ago, and it is what a human scanning the pack actually reads.
Service area accuracy. Set it to where you genuinely go. An inflated service area does not extend your reach; it dilutes relevance for the postcodes you actually serve.
Photos of real jobs. Not stock. Profiles with genuine job photography look like operating businesses, which is the entire question in the customer's mind.
The rest of the detail is in the local SEO guide, and reviews specifically in the trust numbers.
Then answer the phone
You can win the map pack and still lose the job, and most trades do.
Response time is the dominant variable in every lead generation study we have looked at, and it matters more here than anywhere because the customer is holding a phone with two other numbers on the screen. A missed call in this category is not a delayed lead. It is a lost job, permanently, to whoever answered.
The fixes are unglamorous: a real person or answering service during working hours, a callback promise that is actually kept, and a text back to any missed call within minutes. That last one costs almost nothing and recovers jobs you currently never know you lost. The reasoning is in the five minute rule.
Where the money gets wasted
Broad paid search. Bidding on "plumber" with a wide radius buys clicks from people forty miles away and from other trades checking the market. If you run ads, run them tight: exact match, small radius, business hours only, with a negative list. The method is in the one hour ads audit.
A website built like a brochure. For emergency work the site needs a phone number, a service area, a price indication, and proof. Everything else is decoration. The homepage hero should have the number in it at thumb height.
Social media as a lead channel. It is not one, in this category. It is useful for recognition in a defined patch and for showing finished work, but nobody scrolls Instagram and then remembers you when the drain blocks. That is a memory job, not a demand job.
Chasing the wrong jobs. Emergency call outs pay the bills; installations and refits pay for growth. They are different searches with different intent, and they deserve different pages. One page trying to rank for both usually ranks for neither.
The list, in order
- Claim and complete the Google Business Profile properly. Correct primary category, real hours, honest service area, genuine photos.
- Build a review habit: ask at the moment the customer is happiest, which is when the job is finished and working.
- Fix missed call handling before spending a pound on ads.
- Give each service its own page with a price indication.
- Only then consider paid, and keep it tight.
