The Google Business Profile Checklist You Half Finished

Profile signals carry roughly a third of local pack ranking weight, and the highest leverage field on the whole thing is a dropdown most owners set once and never revisit.

Why this one asset outweighs your website locally

For anything with a physical location or a service area, the profile is doing more work than the site. Whitespark's 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors survey puts Google Business Profile signals at around a third of local pack weight, review signals near a fifth, and on page SEO close behind, with proximity to the searcher the single largest input overall.

Proximity you cannot change. Nearly everything else on that list is a form field you can fix this afternoon.

The checklist

1. Primary category. Consistently one of the highest weighted individual factors in the survey, and the most commonly wrong. It is one dropdown, and it defines which searches you are eligible for at all. Pick the category that matches the work you most want, not the broadest one available. Add secondary categories for the rest, but understand they carry much less weight.

2. Business name, exactly as it appears in the real world. Do not stuff keywords into it. It is against Google's guidelines, competitors report it, and suspensions are slow to reverse.

3. NAP consistency. Name, address, and phone identical between the profile, the website, and the major directories. A mismatch weakens the match at exactly the point Google is trying to confirm you are one real business. The same thinking applies to structured data.

4. Service area, set honestly. If you serve customers at their location, list the areas you genuinely cover. Inflating this does not extend your reach; it dilutes relevance where you actually operate.

5. Hours, including the exceptions. Holiday hours, emergency availability, and whether "open now" is true. Being listed as open when you are not is the fastest way to earn a one star review that has nothing to do with your work.

6. Services and products, itemised. Most profiles leave these empty. They are indexable text describing exactly what you sell, in a place Google trusts.

7. Photographs of the real thing. Interior, exterior, team, and finished work. Stock imagery is obvious and it costs you the reassurance a nervous customer is looking for.

8. Reviews, continuously. Volume matters, but recency and velocity matter more. Ten reviews this year beats forty from 2022. Ask at the moment the customer is most pleased, which is the moment the job is done.

9. Replies to every review. Including the bad ones, especially the bad ones. A calm, specific reply to a complaint is read by every future customer and is worth more than the complaint costs. The trust research is in online reviews and social proof.

10. Q&A, seeded by you. You are allowed to ask and answer your own questions. Most profiles leave this to strangers, who then answer wrongly on your behalf.

11. Posts, occasionally. Low ranking weight, some conversion value. Worth doing monthly, not worth doing daily.

12. The website link, pointing somewhere specific. For multi location or multi service businesses, link to the relevant page rather than the homepage.

The things that actively hurt

Keyword stuffed names. Covered above, and the most common suspension cause we see.

A virtual office address. Google is increasingly effective at detecting these, and the penalty is removal rather than a ranking drop.

Duplicate listings. Old profiles from a previous owner or a moved premises split your signals. Find and merge them.

Review gating. Asking only happy customers, or filtering before sending the link, breaches Google's policy. It is also detectable in the pattern, and the reputational cost of being caught exceeds the benefit.

What to do after the profile

Once the profile is right, the next highest return is the website matching it: a page per service, a page per genuine location, and NAP consistent with the profile. That is the local SEO guide.

Then answer the phone, because a profile that produces calls nobody picks up is an expensive way to send business to a competitor. See the five minute rule.

Frequently asked

How long until changes show? Category and content edits often move things within days to a couple of weeks. Review signals build over months.

Should we pay for a citation building service? Citations carry the smallest share of the weight in the survey. Fix the profile first, and only do citations if your NAP is genuinely inconsistent across the web.

Can Fixora audit ours? Yes: category, NAP, services, photos, and a review system that does not breach policy. Send us the profile link and get the findings within 48 hours.
