The brief

The Finest publishes long form true crime built from interrogation and bodycam footage. At the time of writing the channel carries 7.39 million subscribers across 161 videos, and the videos themselves run between roughly 27 and 50 minutes.

That length is the whole problem. Most video editing advice is about the first three seconds, which matters, but a 45 minute documentary has to hold someone for a further 44 minutes and 57 seconds against a feed engineered to interrupt them. There is nowhere to hide: a slow patch in the middle is not a stylistic wobble, it is the point where the retention graph falls off.

The decisions

  1. 01

Cut for the story, not the footage

Source material arrives as hours of raw interrogation and bodycam. The edit is an editorial act: deciding what the story is, what order it reveals in, and what to cut even when the footage is dramatic. Most of the work happens before any effect is applied.

  2. 02

Hold tension across the whole runtime

Long form lives or dies on pacing. Questions are opened early and answered late, dead air is removed without making the cut feel frantic, and the reveal is placed where attention is starting to drift rather than where it happens chronologically.

  3. 03

    Sound does the emotional work

In this category the picture is fixed, low resolution bodycam or a static interrogation room. Music, mix, and silence carry almost all of the tension, which makes audio the highest leverage part of the edit rather than a finishing step.

  4. 04

    A rhythm, not a burst

The value over two years was not any single edit. It was that the channel could plan a publishing schedule and know the edit would arrive, which is the operational half of what a video partner actually sells.
