The brief

WHISP Real Bodycam publishes long form bodycam analysis under the line Real Crime, Real Bodycam, Real Analysis. Videos run roughly 12 to 19 minutes, and at the time of writing the channel has 46 videos and 3.16 thousand subscribers, with individual videos reaching far beyond that: one recent upload sits at 292 thousand views.

The distinguishing feature of this engagement is scope. On most channels the editor receives a script and a narration track. Here the work started at the raw footage and ended at the upload: what the story is, what the narrator says, how it is performed, and how it is cut.

The decisions

  1. 01

    The script is the edit

On an analysis channel the writing decides the pacing before a single cut is made. Each script was built to raise a question in the first thirty seconds and hold the answer, then structure the footage around that spine rather than playing it in the order it was recorded.

  2. 02

Analysis, not narration of the obvious

The format only works if the voice adds something the viewer cannot see: procedure, what the officer is deciding, what the law actually requires. Describing what is on screen is the fastest way to lose a viewer who can already see it.

  3. 03

    One voice, consistently

Tone, pace and delivery held steady across two years so the channel sounds like a person rather than a rotating cast. In a faceless format the voice is the brand, and inconsistency there reads as a different channel.

  4. 04

    Restraint with the source material

This is real footage of real people on the worst day of their lives. The edit stays on the side of analysis rather than spectacle, which is both an editorial position and a practical one, because it is what keeps a channel monetisable.
